Monument Valley is one of those 3D games which you ought to play. Graphically heavy games in genres like racing, shooting and adventure games are mainstream. But Monument Valley sets new standard for the ‘Puzzle’ category. Unlike simple puzzle games, this has optical illusions and requires cognitive presence of the player to clear the levels.

Gameplay

The player-character in Monument Valley is the princess Ida, who roams through the Monument Valley to seek some kind of forgiveness. There are 10 levels with each level having various number of sub levels. Each sub-level has a different monument, so the game doesn’t become repetitive. Also, each monument structure can be restructured in fixed amount of ways by moving pillars or constructing bridges or moving the whole structure to make tessractical optical illusions with otherwise impossible object. There are even crows that try to block princess’ way, who at the end of the game rejoice with princess after she’s forgiven.

Graphics

Monument Valley has one of a kind graphic design. The game sports a minimal 3D design with clean optical illusions. The monuments are designed with simple and subtle details that make a treat for our eyes. The transitions and animations are buttery smooth too. The best way of representing that simple can be interesting!

Controls

The control is not in the form of any buttons as such, but you need to touch the path so as to show princess Ida her path to forgiveness! Even to restructure monuments or construct bridges, you need to touch and move certain apt components to do so.

Background Score

The mystical music that keeps playing in the background makes the experience even more surreal. The music gets you in the perfect mood and mindset to crack the puzzle and get your princess moving. Believe me, the game wouldn’t have been same given with some other music!

Verdict

Monument Valley is the winner of Apple Design Award 2014 and was nominated for The Game Award for Best Independent Game. Priced at Rs. 245 on Google Play Store and Rs. 250 on Apple app store. The games weighs around 250MB on both iOS and Android. Monument Valley is a really well designed and implemented game and thus making the gameplay an enjoyable experience.
