The smartphone era started with the release of the iPhone, and just a few months later Google Inc. started sort of a revelation, with Android. With each passing year since then, smartphones have been getting thinner, lighter yet more powerful, and why not, after all thin phones are easy to hold and carry, and even the added thickness of a protective case won’t be much of a deal breaker for most.
Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo, has launched their latest device of the R series of Android powered smartphones, the ‘Oppo R5’, which is one of the slimmest smartphones available in the market today, for a price of Rs. 29,990.
Measuring in at a mere 4.85 mm thick and weighing 155 gm, the Oppo R5 is available for pre-booking starting January 1, 2015, which was actually launched in late-October, 2014 at $499.
Running Oppo’s proprietary Color OS 2.0 UI on top of Android 4.4 Kitkat, the Oppo R5 smartphone boasts a 5.2 inch HD AMOLED Display protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 supporting a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels giving the device a 423 ppi pixel density.
The Oppo R5 is powered by the 64-bit Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 Octa-core processor clocked in at 1.5 GHz ( Q-Core 1.5 GHZ Cortex-A53 and Q-core 1.0 GHz Cortex-A53) which is complimented by the Adreno 405 GPU, coupled with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB of inbuilt (available storage varies) non-expandable storage.
The device sports a 13 MP rear Autofocus camera with Sony Exmor IMX214 BSI Sensor with LED flash capable of recording 1080p video and 60fps and 720p video at 120fps. On the front, the device sports a 5 MP camera with an 83 degree wide angle lens.
In terms of connectivity, the Oppo R5 supports 4G LTE including Indian 4G bands, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual band Wi-Fi direct, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS/A-GPS GLONASS, however the device does not have a 3.5 mm audio jack, but Oppo includes a USB-to-3.5mm audio adapter in the device package.
The Oppo R5 has a non-user-swappable 2000 mAh Li-Po battery and features Oppo’s VOOC charging technology that helps get a 75 percent charge in just 30 minutes.
Available in Gold and Silver color variants, Oppo claims that materials used in R5’s micro-arc frame are made using high-strength stainless steel to create a much more durable and rugged frame, as opposed to commonly used aluminum alloy.
